Does hair dye work on fur pelts?

I'm wanting to dye an arctic fox black then use parts for a jacket. Will using hair dye work or will i have to use special dye made for fur?

yes hair dye should work providing the fur is washable. i would defiantly do a sample piece. just cut a small piece off and dye it first. the hair dye will make the fur coarser. you need to get a dye that has no lift (that means you are depositing color only). i know sally's beauty supply caries these, i don't know off the top of my head which brand to use. one thing you need to be really careful about is black and red dye both tend to bleed. you may want to wash the fur several times to get rid of any color that isn't absorbed well. you wouldn't want to get caught in the rain or perspire and have your other clothing turn black.

have you searched the internet for fur dye?

i did a search and found an article here that you may want to read before you proceed.

Normal dye will work fine. Believe me, that permanent black dye stains on freakin' EVERYTHING.

On the other hand... what is WOULD do is make the fur coarser. It might be safer to use some other ink, but I don't know what kind....

That's awful! Why don't you just use fur that's already black? I'm not a fan of animal fur anyways, being that there are so many great "faux" furs out there that are far less expensive...

I'm sure the hair dye would work, but that's just ridiculous...
